Caring. Honest. Positive.

We try to offer as much information as possible to the people who seek us, because we understand that trusting your well-being to others is not an easy decision to make. For this reason, we have strived for an open and transparent intake and admission process and answer all the questions that are made.

Yet, there is nothing like hearing from someone who has taken the same journey. Someone who may have felt exactly the same doubts, the same fears and hopes.

The first ambassadors of VillaRamadas – men and women who have not only successfully completed treatment with us but have gone on to live the lives we had wished for them – have generously open their hearts and shared part of their experience so that others may feel more secure when starting on the same path they have already walked.

Below we leave you the story of Carl de Bruijn.

Lista de Conteúdos

1. CARL DE BRUIJN

Carl was one of the first Dutch patients to come to complete treatment with VillaRamadas. At the time, our program was not as well known in the Netherlands and we appreciate the trust that Carl and others deposited in us. Even though he went through ups and downs like everyone who struggles with addiction, Carl has been in recovery for several years and every day continues to choose to live his best life and be his best self. We are happy to have been part of his journey.

2. ADDICTION

Addiction is considered to be a chronic disease that can not only be influenced by an individual’s genetic vulnerability but can also lead to lasting changes in the brain. Using substances or engaging in addictive behaviors results in the release of dopamine, which is often called the “happy hormone” because it provokes a sensation of pleasure or relief from pain. Over time however, the constant release of dopamine signals to the brain that it does not need to keep producing it. This makes it so that individuals need to continue increasing their substance use (or the frequency of the addictive behavior) to experience the same pleasure or relief that came so easily before. Moreover, other activities that used to induce joy or happiness start to be increasingly harder to enjoy. Like any other chronical diseases, addiction does not have a “cure” and the goal of treatment is for individuals to learn how to manage their disease.
